Sufferers of RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy)/CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome) often feel alone and depressed, believing that no one understands their illness and the pain and discomfort they deal with on a daily basis. Since outward signs of the disease are not always apparent, family and friends often think the person is exaggerating their condition.
However, support is available online for those living with RSD/CRPS and other “invisible” conditions. There are actually many support groups and organizations dedicated to encouraging those with invisible disabilities, as well as educating family members on the symptoms and how to be compassionate and supportive to their loved one.
The Invisible Disabilities Association is one such organization. Founded in 1997 by Wayne Connell, their mission is to encourage, educate, and connect people and organizations affected by invisible disabilities around the world. They reach out to many thousands of people each month living with such conditions, of which RSD/CRPS is but one.
Their publication “But You LOOK Good” educates family and friends on what to say, what not to say, and discusses how to help your loved one and be a source of compassion and support. They also conduct seminars for businesses, hospitals, and other support organizations. They provide information on disability benefits that may be available, medication costs, information on many of the different “invisible” conditions, as well as personal stories from others living with such conditions. Another thing that many find helpful is IDA’s online social forum, called My Invisible Disabilities Community. Their chatroom has several scheduled chat times during the week.

IDA also has many educational and informative videos for purchase, as well as a “Share Your Story” section, which encourages people to submit a video detailing their own personal journey.
